The Zou Bisou

We received a message from Julia Krasnikova asking us to check out her band The Zou Bisou via a You Tube link.  We gave it a listen, was impressed with the soulful sound that we were sent. On top of that we noticed that the band was based in Moscow, intrigued in to how they got in to the soul and what the movement is like out there, we thought we would ask a few questions.

G-C - Who are The Zou Bisou

JK - The Zou Bisou are Julia and Sergey, devoted admirers of soul music and mod scene, who made demo recordings and found three more musicians: Ilya, Alexey and Ivan. Julia is the singer, but also plays drums, percussion, kazoo and bass guitar. Sergey plays combo organ, guitar and together with Alexey provides backing vocals. Alexey specializes in guitar. Ilya plays the bass guitar and Ivan is our drummer.

When and how did you form the band

Half a year ago we made demo records and held a casting to find more musicians for live performances.

For those that haven’t heard you, how would you describe your music

It’s soul music influenced by mid 60's classics to the style of late 60's with a bit of rock flavour

Who are your musical influences

Our musical influences are soul titans like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Syl Johnson, Wilson Pickett, The Temptations, The Flirtations, Martha & The Vandellas, The Chambers Brothers, great blue-eyed soul artists like Zoot Money, Steve Windwood and Don Fardon, blues guitarists like Albert King, Freddie King, B.B. King, Luther Allison and Jimi Hendrix, bass players like James Jamerson and so on.

What is the movement like over in Moscow

In Moscow the movement is a close group of dedicated mods, a couple of really cool DJ's like Oleg MobKid and a very limited selection of bands like The Riots.

Are there any regular clubs that like minded people hang out

I wouldn't say that Moscow mod scene has a club which specializes only in soul and mod music - in fact the whole scene settles down on one place for a couple of years and then we transfer to another club. For now this place is a club which is situated in the centre on Moscow, called Duma (as it is placed just in a few steps from State Duma). This club also turned out to be a place for international concerts - just a few weeks ago we had a concert together with French Boutik there.

The band has got a good look about them, how easy is it to source 60's clothes out there

It's not so hard to use ebay for this purpose, but as for local shops, we don't know any special 60's-oriented ones. Generally we have a wide range of brands from Lacoste to Fred Perry, but if you like brand clothes it’s better to buy them abroad for more reasonable prices. But still if you prefer something uncommon, vintage or you aren't satisfied with prices we try to use ebay.

Any releases coming soon for The Zou Bisou

On the 16th of July a compilation CD by Heavy Soul Records with different mod groups is going to be released and there you'll be able to listen one of our new songs called Genie. We are also planning to release a CD album with one very well-known label by the end of the year. We' re also planning to release both of our new songs on 7'' so we're looking for a label to make a dream come true.

Where will it be available to purchase

Will you be visiting the UK at all

Currently we're discussing this question with a promoter, so I hope we'll be able to come to the UK next year.

What else can we expect from The Zou Bisou for the remaindr of the year

We are planning to record a few more songs, I guess you'll be able to listen to some more covers just by the end of the summer, and by the end of the year we are going to release a couple of our own songs.

Cheers for the interview Julia. G-C
